The Elections Commission (EC) on Monday fined five out of the eight candidates who contested in the last presidential election over the failure to comply with the legal standard for disclosing campaign finances.
After reviewing financial statements submitted by the candidates, the commission decided to take action against candidates and their agents over the statements that did not meet the requirements stipulated in the general election law, the EC said in a statement.
The candidates who were fined:
- Independent candidate Umar Naseer
- Independent candidate Hassan Zameel
- Independent candidate Faris Maumoon
- The Democrats candidate Ilyas Labeeb
- Maldives National Party (MNP) candidate Mohamed Nazim
The EC fined the candidates MVR 20,000 each. Their official election agents were each fined MVR 6,000. The fines must be paid to the EC within 30 days.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Jumhooree Party (JP) candidate Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim submitted statements that complied with the standards set by the commission.
