The list of five MPs who can preside over a session of the Parliament in case the Speaker and Deputy Speaker are absent has been revised.

The new list and order was announced by Speaker Mohamed Aslam. He said the list of five MPs was compiled under Section 43 of the Rules of Procedure.

Five MPs on the list and their duration in Parliament

  1. Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam Mohammed - 18 years and eight months without since February 27, 2007
  2. Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim - 14 years and five months since May 28, 2009
  3. Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem - 14 years and five months since May 28, 2009
  4. Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa - 14 years and five months since May 28, 2009
  5. Kudahuvadhoo MP Ahmed Amir - 14 years and five months since May 28, 2009

"The order of these Honorable MPs is determined by priority to their term of office in accordance with Section 43(a) and (c) of the Rules of Procedure," Aslam said.

The order will be determined based on the seniority of the MPs when the term of an MP ends, he added.

Previously, the list was compiled based on the total term of office. The revised list does not include Vilufushi MP Hassan Afeef.

However, MDP members had earlier accused Afeef of trying to obstruct the impeachment of former Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.
