Ministers were appointed to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's cabinet on Friday night.
The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice Muthasim Adnan with President Muizzu and Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef in attendance.
Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed / Minister of Islamic Affairs
Dr. Shaheem was Islamic Minister in the last Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) government and State Minister for Islamic Minister in the first Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) government. He went on to serve as Vice Chancellor and Chancellor of the Islamic University of Maldives.
Shaheem earned a PhD in Islamic revealed knowledge and human sciences (fiqh and usoolul fiqh) at the International Islamic University in Malaysia. He also studied in the Maldives, Pakistan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
Ali Ihusan / Minister of Homeland Security and Technology
Ali Ihusan served 10 years in the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) and retired with honor in 2017. He officially became active in politics with the Maldives National Party (MNP) in 2021.
Ihusan holds a bachelors degree in defense and strategic studies from the American military academy West Point and a masters in business administration from Singapore's Nanyang Business School.
Dr. Aishath Rameela / Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Animal Welfare
Rameela previously served as State Minister for Health and Gender during the last PPM government as well as the registrar of the Medical and Dental Association and the dean of Avid College.
Dr. Mariyam Mariya / Minister of Higher Education, Labor and Skills Development
Dr. Mariya is a new face in Maldivian politics. She did not hold any political posts in the past.
Before working as a senior tutor at New Zealand's Waikato University, she served as a doctoral supervisor, visiting scholar and external examiner at the Maldives National University. She holds a PhD in applied linguistics.
Dr. Ismail Shafeeu / Education Minister
Dr. Shafeeu was State Minister for Education in the last PPM government and went on to become the research and publication dean at the Islamic University.
Shafeeu earned a degree in teaching from the Maldives National University, a masters degree in education management from the Universiti Malaya in Malaysia, and a PhD from the Durham University in the UK.
Dr. Aishath Shiham / Minister of Social and Family Development
Dr. Shiham rejoins the cabinet after serving as Education Minister under former President Abdulla Yameen.
She holds a bachelors degree in guidance and counselling from the University of South Pacific, a masters degree in counselling psychology from Australia's Macquarie University, and a PhD in pyschology from the University of New Castle in the UK.
Dr. Abdulla Rafiu / Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation
A rehabilitation specialist, Rafiu worked as a physician for the national football team and athletics teams that compete in international tournaments.
He also completed a course in rehabilitation, sports physiotherapy and sports physician at the All India Institute of Physical Medicine.
Dr. Abdulla Khaleel / Minister of Health
Dr. Khaleel was formerly a PPM MP for the Nilandhoo constituency and the party's Secretary General. He also worked as the Secretary General of the Civil Service Commission.
When he earned a PhD in public policy in 2015, Dr. Khaleel focused his thesis on decentralization in the Maldives.
Dr. Mohamed Shafeeq / Minister of Finance
Dr. Shafeeq was the Chief Financial Officer of the Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC) and he previously worked at the company in other roles.
Shafeeq earned his PhD in business administration from Cambodia's IIC University of Technology through Sri Lanka's European Institute of Professional Education.
Dr. Abdulla Muththalib / Minister of Construction and Infrastructure
Dr. Muththalib was Muizzu's Deputy Minister when the latter was the Housing Minister. He holds a PhD in civil engineering from the University College of London in the UK.
Ibrahim Waheed (Asward) / Minister of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts
A former journalist and Deputy CEO of Raajje TV, Asward contested in an MDP parliamentary primary for the Maafannu Medhu constituency. He later left the MDP and ran for the Thulusdhoo parliament seat on the Maldives Third-Way Democrats (MTD) ticket. He pursued higher education in journalism.
Ibrahim Faisal / Minister of Tourism
Faisal is the son of PNC Chairman Abdul Raheem Abdulla. During the last PPM government, he worked at the Maldives High Commission in Malaysia and became Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports. He previously worked at the Maldives Police Service.
In the last parliamentary election, Faisal ran unsuccessfully for the Hulhumale' seat. He remains a PNC senator. He pursued higher education at Malaysia's Westminster International College.
Dr. Ali Haidar / Minister of Housing, Land and Urban Development
Dr. Haidar was the Housing Minister for a very brief stint during the final term of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
He studied town and country planning at the University of Manchester and earned a PhD in planning studies from the University College of London in the UK.
Mohamed Ameen / Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation
A former pilot, Ameen was previously the operations director of Island Aviation and worked as President Muizzu's campaign manager.
Following his dismissal from the national airline, the Employment Tribunal ruled that the termination was unlawful and ordered his reinstatement.
Gassan Maumoon / Minister of Defense
Son of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and MP for Guraidhoo, Gassan was a President's Office Minister during the last PPM government.
Gassan studied molecular biology and biomedical science research at Kings College London.
Mohamed Saeed / Minister of Economic Development and Trade
Maavah MP Saeed held the same portolio in the last PPM government. He is currently PNC's Vice President.
Saeed holds a masters degree in tourism and hospitality from the University of Birmingham in the UK.
Ahmed Usham / Attorney General
Vilimale' MP Usham was previously the Deputy Attorney General and Deputy Solicitor General. He earned a law degree from the University of West England.
Usham was elected to parliament as an independent MP but later joined the MNP. He is the party's Vice President.
Adam Shareef / Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works
PNC Vice President and MP for Maduvvari, Shareef was the Defense Minister and Deputy Education Minister in the last PPM government.
He earned a masters degree in education from the University of East Anglia in the UK.
Ahmed Shiyam / Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources
MP for Naifaru and PPM Vice President, Shiyam is among the PPM's most influential and popular leaders.
Shiyam is a professional diver who worked for many years in the tourism industry.
Thoriq Ibrahim / Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy
Thoriq held the same portolio in the last PPM government.
He holds a bachelors degree in building services engineering from the Loughborough University of Technology in the UK, a masters degree in building science from the National University of Singapore and an MBA from Preston University in the United States.
Adam Naseer Ibrahim / Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage
Known for his services to the Dhivehi language and linguistics, Naseer takes charge of a new ministry formed under the Muizzu government.
He was awarded a national youth prize for services to poetry and language in 2007. He worked as a lecturer at the Islamic University for the past 29 years.
Moosa Zameer / Minister of Foreign Affairs
Zameer was Tourism Minister in the last PPM government and previously served one term as the MP for Kinbidhoo constituency.
He earned a bachelors degree in business management from the University of Sunderland and a masters degree in business administration from the Cardiff Metropolitan University in the UK.
