The Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has warned former President Abdulla Yameen that his privileges under house arrest would be revoked for engaging in political activities in violation of the parole law and an agreement that he signed.
Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu told Adhadhu that the privileges granted to Yameen does not include conducting political activity, which he has done against the law.
"So a warning has been sent to him to stop doing that," he said.
Yameen, who was serving an 11-year prison sentence, was transferred to house arrest on October 1. He was permitted to be active in the Male' region on October 28.
Following the change from house arrest to confinement in Male', Yameen went to the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) office and met with supporters.
He then spoke at a PPM rally last Monday.
While Yameen was in office, the prisons and parole law was amended to prohibit convicts from engaging in active politics.
Article 62 of the law states that convicts do not have the right to participate in an activity carried out by a political party while they are imprisoned to serve a sentence.
