Pay rise for all state employees in January included in budget

The Finance Ministry has included pay rises in January for all state employees in the budget proposed for next year.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih pledged pay hikes of at least 40 percent for all 44,281 state employees at a campaign rally in Baa Thulhaadhoo on August 21, 2023.

After submitting a 2024 budget of MVR 49.5 billion to parliament today, Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer confirmed to Adhadhu that allocations were made for a positive change to staff salaries.

Expenditure on employees accounts for 24 percent of the budget.

On the night that he announced the pay hikes, the President also provided examples, which were:

  • Police constable: MVR 11,000 to MVR 15,400
  • Chief Inspector: MVR 34,300 to MVR 48,000
  • Private in the army: MVR 11,500 to MVR 16,100
  • Council employee: MVR 7,200 to MVR 10,500
  • Civil service director: MVR 16,000 to MVR 23,200

The pay rises cover soldiers, police officers, all judiciary staff, corrections staff, customs, immigration, imams and muezzins, and all civil servants, including those who work at local councils.
