High Court Judge Ahmed Shakeel has sought approval for his retirement.

Shakeel, who was appointed to the High Court in March, applied to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) for retirement some time ago. But a decision has not been made on his request.

A JSC meeting is due to take place tomorrow, Adhadhu has learned. As there are not that many cases that the commission needs to conclude at present, a decision on Judge Shakeel's retirement is expected to be made during the meeting.

However, the commission has not been available for an official comment yet.

When he was previously at the Criminal Court, Judge Ahmed Shakeel sentenced former President Abdulla Yameen to 11 years in prison on bribery and money laundering charges raised over the leasing of Vaavu Aarah by the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

Yameen was barred from contesting in the last presidential election due to the conviction.
