Parliament sitting canceled over lack of quorum

Today's sitting of parliament was canceled due to a lack of quorum.

The cancellation was announced by Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla, who was presiding over the sitting, as enough MPs for a quorum were not present at the usual 9 am starting time.

The quorum to hold a sitting is 22 out of the 87 MPs in parliament.

The first item on the agenda for Tuesday's sitting was the submission of a supplementary budget. The Finance Ministry has sought parliamentary approval to add MVR 6.5 billion to the annual state budget.

Debate on a resolution proposed by Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef calling on the government to reclaim part of the country's allegedly lost fishing waters was also on the agenda.

Other agenda items included debates on constitutional amendments proposed to limit the number of MPs and change the composition of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
