Laws governing the presidential election need to be reformed and modernized, Elections Commission (EC) Vice President Ismail Habeeb has said.
Speaking at a meeting held by the commission on Wednesday night to announce the official result of the presidential election, Habeeb said the presidential election laws were made 15 years ago.
The laws need important and modernizing changes, which should be made when there is no upcoming election, he added.
The EC needs to meet and hold discussions with political parties and relevant institutions, Habeeb said.
"About some matters of the law. Especially some things in the Supreme Court guideline have now been included in some laws. So because of that voters are having to endure some things that they did not have to before," Habeeb said.
On the recently concluded presidential election, Habeeb said the polls were free, fair and conducted smoothly without any fear or intimidation.
In the past, losing candidates made certain allegations against the EC but this time President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih showed a perfect democratic example, Habeeb said.
