Maldives National Air Traffic Service has been created to strengthen air traffic control services.
Flights in Maldives' airspace were previously monitored and regulated by the Air Traffic Control Tower and Control Center under the Air Traffic Management Unit of the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).
The Maldives National Air Traffic Service was established as a subsidiary of MACL. Air Traffic Controller Mohamed Athuhar has been appointed as the Managing Director of the company.
According to an MACL official, the movements in Maldives' airspace are increasing with the improvements in the transport system.
A separate company for air traffic control was established to provide service in a manner that would maintain safety and security as per the Chicago Convention.
