A total of 215 hectares is to be reclaimed from Uthuru Thila Falhu to award land plots under the second phase of the ‘Binveriya’ housing scheme, the Housing and Planning Ministry said on Sunday.
The Housing Ministry opened applications under the scheme on Saturday night after President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced that plots would be awarded from the reclaimed lagoon to people who have either resided in Male’ or been registered in the special municipal registry for 20 years.
“The total size of the land designated for awarding plots under this scheme as stated in the announcement for the program in the gazette is 5,525,000 square feet,” the ministry said.
The flats to be awarded under the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ scheme would also be built on the land to be reclaimed from Uthuru Thila Falhu, also known as the north Giraavaru lagoon, the ministry added.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Male’ on Friday night, President Solih denied the opposition’s allegations about the military harbor under development in Uthuru Thila Falhu in Male’ atoll.
“Maldivians will live there, not foreigners. Male’ to Vilimale’, Vilimale’ to Gulhifalhu, Gulhifalhu to Thilafushi, Thilafushi to Giraavaru lagoon, Giraavaru lagoon to Uthuru Thila Falhu - it will be connected via the bridge,” Solih said.
New rules for awarding land plots under phase two of the ‘Binveriya’ scheme and for awarding flats under phase two of the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ scheme were gazetted on Saturday night.
Applications for the plots and apartments can be submitted online through the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ portal before 3 pm on October 24, according to the announcement.
