Drone transfer of laboratory samples tested in Gaaf Dhaal

Aug 8, 2023, 12:31 PM

The transfer of laboratory samples on drones has been tested in Gaaf Dhaal atoll.

Announcing the drone use at a campaign rally in Gaaf Dhaal Madaveli today, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said efforts were underway to introduce a drone service to improve the healthcare system.

“We will begin work on transferring laboratory supplies using drones. It has now been tested in this atoll,” he noted.

Transferring samples between laboratories on drones was included in the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) manifesto for the president’s second term.

Delivery of samples and medicines on drones is a service currently provided in some countries.

The president also pledged to set up a separate institution for the national health service.

The transport ministry has decided to issue permits for the use of drones for civilian services before the end of the year. The Civil Aviation Authority has since gazetted rules for the operation of drones.
