Raajje Transport Link's (RTL) high-speed launch ferry service was launched in Huvadhoo atoll on Thursday, connecting the biggest atoll in the country.

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) which operates RTL said the service would be free of charge to the public during the first week.

MTCC said the first week would be used to create awareness about the service and the charges would be imposed starting July 20.

Ferries would run every day of the week, with a total of six ferries to be used for nine routes between all the islands of Gaaf Alif and Gaaf Dhaal atoll.

The ferry schedule and routes have been shared on the MTCC social media platforms.

RTL service is provided on modern ferries with a capacity of 50 passengers. The ferries are designed to accommodate wheelchairs and stretchers with ease.

The government aims to launch RTL ferry services in four southern atolls before the end of this year.

The service has now been launched in the northernmost part of the country in Haa Alif, Haa Dhaal, Shaviyani and Lhaviyani atolls.

The first phase of the project was awarded to MTCC in January 2021. The new RTL ferries are being built by Al Shaali Marine.
