The Elections Commission (EC) has made arrangements for online re-registration for this year's presidential election.

EC vice president Ismail Habeeb told Adhadhu today that online re-registration was among the changes made for this year's election.

In previous elections, voters were required to submit a paper form to request re-registration.

"In the past you had to submit a physical form to the Elections Commission. Now anyone anywhere in the world can re-register online," Habeeb said.

According to the regulations for the presidential election published Saturday night, a person who wishes to vote outside his or her native island should submit the registration form through the mechanism arranged by the commission.

Re-registration for this year's presidential election is not yet open. It can be done when the voters' registry is finalized after considering complaints.

The list of eligible voters is due to be published today with a deadline of June 22 to submit complaints. After verification of the registry, re-registration will be opened on July 16.

The presidential election will take place on September 9.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Qasim Ibrahim, leader of the government coalition's Jumhooree Party, have announced their candidacies.

The opposition candidate, former president Abdulla Yameen, is serving an 11-year prison sentence on corruption charges.
