The criminal court on Tuesday sentenced a man to 15 years in prison for the sexual abuse of an intellectually disabled person.
Ahmed Shakir, from Laamu Kalaidhoo, was charged with performing a sexual act with the understanding that the mentally disabled victim did not have either the power for self-defence or any means to give consent.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge raised under the sexual offences law. But according to a statement released by the criminal court, he was convicted and sentenced to 15 years in jail.
As the sexual offences law prohibits the disclosure of details in such cases, the criminal court did not publish the case report on its website.
