The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has supported the idea of working together with the Democrats.
In a post on X on Saturday, former President Mohamed Nasheed wrote that the best path for the country at the moment is for the MDP and Democrats to band together.
"We have to put this government on the right track, even if that means working together. Our party has always taken a stand to work with those who want freedom and democracy, with those who are trying to maintain democracy in Maldives," Fayyaz said.
Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has also previously called for the MDP and Democrats to work together.
Nasheed left the MDP following disputes with Solih. The biggest issue was Solih's decision to run for a second term.
The Democrats were formed after Nasheed failed to win the presidential ticket during the MDP primary.
Fayyaz said he would welcome Nasheed if he decided to rejoin the party, but stressed that there was dissatisfaction within the party due to Nasheed's actions in the past two years.
"We have dissatisfaction with President Nasheed.. It is up to President Nasheed to win back the trust of our members. Anyone can join [MDP]," the former Economic Minister stated.
Fayyaz further said that the MDP National Council has also decided to work with other parties and associations against the government. The MDP's policy on this is clear, he said.
Meanwhile, Democrats President Imthiyaz Fahmy (Inthi) welcomed Nasheed's call to work together with MDP.
