First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has decided to go to court against the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), its chairman Fayyaz Ismail and activist Maryam Zubair (Mandhy) over allegations that the first couple's son, Umeir Mohamed Muizzu, was caught vaping.
At a press briefing today, lawyer Azima Shukoor said the allegations made during a MDP protest were criminally chargeable. But the President's family has not decided to seek criminal charges against anyone, she stated.
"As the mother of the children, Sajida Mohamed has not decided to seek criminal charges. If the state agencies wish to proceed, they can go ahead [with a criminal investigation]. We have decided to conduct the civil parts of the civil cases," Azima said.
She added that they have decided to sue Mandhy, who made the remarks, opposition leader Fayyaz and the MDP.
She said they decided to sue them because the rights of the President's minor children were violated and they were put at risk.
However, she did not say how the case would be built or what remarks had put the children at risk. Azima said she did not want to disclose further details as the case is still under review.
