President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has promised to establish waste management systems and solve waste disposal issues in all the islands this year.

Addressing the people of Gaaf Dhaal Fiyoari island, Muizzu said establishing waste management systems in all the islands is a big challenge but the work can be done.

"Establishing waste management systems in all the islands is a very important thing that we have decided to do this year," he said.

"This is a huge undertaking. This is a very old problem. But we have set a very ambitious target to solve this problem. However, it is an achievable target. Hopefully, we will achieve this target."

Muizzu said the waste management systems will be established in the islands based on the population, number of people visiting the island, industries and other activities carried out in the island.

The national program for waste management in the islands Magey Saafu Raajje (My Clean Maldives) was launched in February 2024.

The government said the main objective of program is to establish comprehensive waste management systems that are environmentally friendly and sustainable.

The program includes the development of regional centers for environmentally friendly disposal of waste and transportation service from the islands to the centers.
