Dhuvaafaru Councillor Mariyam Yashfa, who performed the song Thee Bahuloolekey ("You Are a Deceiver") at the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) rally held in the Carnival area on December 10, has been summoned by the police.

Yashfa told Adhadhu today that she was contacted by phone and informed that an official summons would be issued later in the day.

"First, Dhuvaafaru police called me. I asked them the reason for the summons, but they didn’t give me one. Later, I received another call from Malé, where I was told I’m under suspicion for something related to my speech at the rally," Yashfa said.

Yashfa gained recognition on November 11 after singing a bandhi during her speech at the MDP’s Dhandikoshi jagaha. On December 10, at an MDP rally titled “In Defense of the Constitution,” she sang Thee Bahuloolekey, a song that translates to:

"You are a deceiver, you are a devil, don’t come near me, don’t come near me."

The performance went viral on social media.

This is the first instance under the current administration where someone has been summoned for statements made at a political event.

However, MDP social media activist Hussain Shaafiu, also known as “Thuthu,” was summoned by police on December 1 regarding a post made on X.

Shaafiu stated that the post, published on November 8 under the account “Charlie_thuhthu,” was not directed at anyone in particular and contained no content intended to incite fear. He claimed that it was the police who interpreted the word "kazzaabu" (liar) in the post as a reference to a specific individual.
