A convicted child molester has been transferred to house arrest due to medical reasons.
Hashim Abubakuru, 57, of Haa Alif Hoarafushi island was sentenced to 12 years and five months on November 20, 2022. He is due to be released from prison in May 2035.
Maldives Correctional Service said he was released on August 5 for a hip operation that could not be performed in Maldives. He returned to the country on September 16 after undergoing the surgery.
"Hashim Abubakuru's medical condition prevents him from being treated in jail and as recommended by his doctor, he has been placed under temporary house arrest to serve his sentence," Corrections said.
But the authority did not provide details on the surgery and medical treatment he needs that cannot be provided in prison.
However, several hip surgeries can be done in the Maldives and the prisons have facilities needed for medical treatments.
The government has faced criticism on social media with some people accusing authorities of transferring a convicted child molester to house arrest because of his family ties with a ruling party lawmaker.
