Police have said that samples did not test positive for narcotics despite Home Minister Ali Ihusan announcing that a shipment of cannabis vape oil was seized at Velana International Airport (VIA) on October 14.
Ihusan announced that the cannabis vape oil shipment was seized just hours after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu declared the decision to ban the import, use and trade of vaping devices and their components in the Maldives.
The importer denied the accusation at the time and many people said the government seized the vape oil shipment to bolster Muizzu's decision.
When Adhadhu questioned police about the seized shipment on Monday, they sent a message to the media saying that the samples taken from the alleged cannabis vape oil had tested negative for any type of drugs.
"The forensic lab test on the samples in the shipment came negative for drugs," police said.
Adhadhu earlier questioned why no arrests were made in the case and whether the items were tested for drugs. However, police have previously refused to respond.
In a post on X on October 14, Ihusan shared images of the seized items and said they were being smuggled into the country as vape oil.
He added that the decision to ban vapes was connected to similar cases of abusing drugs through vapes.
