The government has announced that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu will be visiting India from October 7 to 10.

President's Office Chief Spokesperson Heena Waleed said in a post on X that Muizzu will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the visit.

The visit will include official talks between the two countries. The President will be accompanied by a delegation of ministers during his visit to India.

Although the Maldives government said Muizzu would commence the trip on October 6, Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told a press conference at the Indian External Affairs Ministry that he would arrive in India on October 7.

So it is expected that the President will depart from the Maldives late on Sunday night.

International media earlier reported, citing Indian officials, that the purpose of the visit is to seek financial assistance. But neither government has commented on the matter.

After assuming office in November last year, Muizzu visited China and criticized India upon returning to the Maldives.

Relations between the two countries also deteriorated after senior government officials insulted Modi on social media.

However, relations have been improving since Muizzu attended Modi's swearing-in ceremony.
