A senior political director has been appointed to the Ministry of Education despite concerns from international institutions that the fiscal situation is so severe that the government has no choice but to cut spending.

Habeeb Mohamed was appointed as the Senior Political Director for Education. The ministry's media officer confirmed his appointment to Adhadhu.

Habeeb announced his appointment on social media and his close friends congratulated him.

There have been concerns because the government was not taking measures to reduce political posts and cut down spending.

As of May 1, the Education Ministry had 32 political employees, Adhadhu found following an RTI request.

More than MVR 1 million is spent on the salaries of all the political employees every month. On an annual basis, their salaries cost MVR 12.2 million. For five years, it is MVR 61.2 million.

Before coming to power, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu promised not to increase the number of political employees to more than 700. However, the number has increased significantly.
