An investigation has been launched against 20 Customs officers who allegedly embezzled funds and circulated MVR 400 million in their accounts.

Adhadhu understands that the 20 officers embezzled the funds through Customs services and illegally charged higher duties. The police and the parliament are investigating the matter.

Police searched the phones and electronic devices of four of the 20 accused officers under a court order. However, it is unclear whether any of them were arrested.

Reliable sources told Adhadhu that one of the accused officers is now retired. He was a senior Customs officer. Other accused officers are also in the process of retiring.

There have always been allegations of corruption against Customs officers and action has been taken in the past.

In October last year, reports emerged about the smuggling of cargo shipments into the country.
