Customs have seized 2.4kg of drugs smuggled into the Maldives by air.

Maldives Customs Service said 319 grams of heroin and 2.1kg of mephedrone were seized at the Velana International Airport (VIA) on December 26.

Customs did not provide details. Police have not yet revealed whether any arrests were made in connection to the case.

Home Minister Ali Ihusan earlier said drugs that were usually smuggled by sea are now being smuggled in small quantities by air.

At the press conference held at the President's Office on October 22, police also revealed details of the drugs seized over the past 11 months.

Police Commissioner Ali Shujau said 177 kg of drugs and more than 8,300 bottles of alcohol have been seized.
