The government has signed the project agreement with a Chinese company to build 1,000 housing units in Baa Eydhafushi under an MoU reached in May.
Construction Minister Dr. Abdulla Muththalib and Sinohydro Corporation's Country Manager Pen Guangshu signed the agreement at a ceremony at the President's Office.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Muththalib said twelve 15-storey towers would be built in Edhafushi under the project, adding that the project will include 336 three-bedroom flats and 772 two-bedroom flats.
"As Eydhafushi has been designated as an urban centre, it will become a population and development hub in the Baa atoll," he said.
Muththalib expressed hopes to acquire funds for the project and begin work within the next year.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu pledged to build 70,000 housing units across the country including a large housing project in Eydhafushi.
On a visit to the island during the presidential election campaign, he said Eydhafushi would become the island where the most number of housing units would be built.
