President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has nominated Abdul Haseeb Ismail as a new member of the Elections Commission (EC).

His name was proposed to the Parliament as the term of the current EC President Fuwad Thowfeek ends in November.

Abdul Haseeb was the Permanent Secretary of the Islamic Ministry during the previous government. However, he was removed from the post at the request of former Islamic Minister Dr. Ahmed Zahir for allegedly being too strict towards some employees.

He is currently the Deputy Director of the EC. Meanwhile, the names of the other applicants for EC were also submitted to the Parliament.

EC members have a five-year term and each member can serve two terms. Fuwad's term ends on November 24.

The matter of considering a nominee for the EC was sent to the Parliament Committee on Independent Institutions.
