Information about the death of Mohamed Jameel, 45, at the Maafushi prison has been gathered for an inquiry, the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has said.

Citing suspicious matters in Jameel's, The Democrats submitted a complaint on Sunday seeking an investigation by the HRCM. The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have also expressed concerns and called for an investigation.

"We have inspected Jameel's body, taken photos, clarified information from Maldives Correctional Service officers and the family, and checked Mohamed Jameel's medical file," HRCM said last night.

Moreover, HRCM said it has also visited the jail, viewed CCTV footage of the cell and gathered information from Jameel's former cellmates and other inmates at the unit.

In its case, The Democrats cited widespread concerns over alleged torture and negligence in providing treatment by Corrections officers. The party also asked HRCM to ascertain whether Jameel's rights had been assured.
