A police officer was injured last night as a group of people obstructed a police drug operation in Fuvahmulah.

The clashes occurred when police attempted to take a person suspected of possession of drugs into custody during an operation conducted in the Dhoodigan ward of Fuvahmulah, police said in a message sent to the media. Police did not reveal the extent of the injury sustained by the officer.

“During an attempt to take a person suspected of possession of drugs into police custody, other people came to the area, confronted police and obstructed police duty. And a police officer was injured in this confrontation,” police said in the message.

Three other people were arrested in connection with the disturbance, police said.

A video of the clashes has emerged on social media. The video shows a group of youths carrying pieces of wood to confront police officers.

The incident is under investigation.
