A no-confidence motion has been filed against Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihusaan after the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) submitted fake forms to the Elections Commission (EC) to increase its membership.

Twelve MPs from the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) signed the motion. The party's parliamentary group earlier passed to submit the motion against Ihusaan after alleging him of leading the campaign to submit fake forms.

In addition to the issue of fake membership forms, the issue of handing over the Expat System to Malaysia's Bestinet company and alleged influence over police investigations was mentioned in the motion.

Images which show Ihusaan supervising the preparation of fake forms to increase the membership of the ruling party leaked on the social media platform X on Wednesday.

When asked whether personal data from the Department of National Registration (DNR) database was accessed to fill out the forms, Ihusaan said DNR data cannot be accessed now.

But he noted that information from the DNR database had been leaked previously. Ihusaan did not deny that they used information from the DNR database for the PNC membership forms.

Last week, the PNC admitted that forms with forged signatures, fake fingerprints and stolen personal data and photos were submitted to the EC amid growing complaints of membership fraud.

Some such cases have been reported to the police and the EC is also investigating the matter.

A motion of no-confidence against cabinet ministers can be submitted to the People's Majlis with the signatures of 10 MPs.
